LORI NATHAN HEARING DEBRIEF #2
Last Thursday started a new journey in me. Lori Nathan’s parole hearing exposed me to deep issues that it seems I can’t turn my back on now. It’s been a very tearful, depressing, questioning, bewildering, empathetic and hopeful 5 days as my head and heart have been spinning as a result of that hearing, the history, the people, the new relationships, etc.
Since last Thursday, I have not wanted to do anything except sleep and stare off into the distance. Of course, my schedule has not allowed for that. However, in my down time, my internal battle has been fighting between the cerebral desire was to write and journal and document, and the physical ability to barely sit up straight and not start crying. Last night I was going to force myself to ’suck it up’ and start writing about it. I wanted to return a phone call first. My uncle Joe had called on Friday after he read the article, so I finally called him back. God is so kind. That 3 hours on the phone with him, talking about aspects I had not yet said out loud turned out to be what the LORD used to gently guide me around the corner.
I started writing today around 10:30am. After 4 pages, single spaced, increased margins, etc I am not even close to being done, but at least I’ve started and I’m grateful. I know I can never capture it all, but I just don’t want to waste the opportunity that God’s given me to speak of His mercy, His justice, His forgiveness, His wrath, His grace…His Supremacy.
We’ve all been somewhere dark, whether by our own hands and/or someone else’s hands. The challenge is to find Christ in the midst of it and to allow Him to be the Light…the Light that is absolute truth.
LORI NATHAN HEARING DEBRIEF #1
Thank you for everyone’s prayers and comments and emails. While I want to write a lot right now, I am still thinking/reflecting about the day…it was intense, incredible, overwhelming, joyous, educational, tender, intimate, horrifying, hot, seered into my mind…I’m glad I went.
I will give a few logistical highlights now (I took copious notes all day) and then I will do another post later with my thoughts and reflections…it was heavy and I’ve got that wedding today. ![]()
THE DAY’S TIMELINE
-Our hearing was scheduled for 10:30am; we were told to get there at 9:30am for security etc.
-The hearing scheduled before ours ran over.
-We started our hearing at 12:42pm…while we waited for 3 hours for our hearing to start we reunited, met, talked, joked, remembered, etc.
-Our first break was at 2pm; next around 3pm; Deliberations started at 4:25pm; Ruling/Recommendations were at 5pm; the hearing ended at 5:26pm
THE ORDER OF PAROLE HEARING EVENTS
-Inmate entered; legal identifications; everyone present identified; legal paperwork; any objections from Lori Nathan’s privately hired lawyer; Lori’s crimes were read in detail
-History of the inmate’s life
-Social/Educational gains whilst in prison (programs, volunteer work, etc)
-Psych Eval
-Housing & Employment options/plans if released
-Letters of recommendation from Lori’s friends/family
-DAs closing statement (incredible!)
-DA recommendation
-Defense’s closing
-Lori read a letter that she wrote
-Victim statements (read by 11 of the victims/parents that were present…I read mine)
-Deliberation
-Letters from absent victims read
-Parole Commisioner and Deputy Commissioner’s ruling and recommendations
-Inmate dismissed
-Q&A with victims
She was DENIED PAROLE and not eligible for 5 more years (the max allowed)!!!
here are some of my scribbled notes with just some of his ruling comments:
“…not suitable for parole…due to multiple victims, brutalized, terrorized, victimized…committed in such a cold, brutal, heinous manner…abused, mutilated, choked, knocked teeth out…all offenses show disregard for suffering and human life…calculated …that ANYone could do that to children demonstrates disregard for suffering and cruelty…In 2 years of cases, this is the most horrendous to hear…the troubling part is your claim of innocence…you need to understand what led you to do what you did to these children…until you realize the pain and suffering that YOU caused and why you did it, you’re unpredicatable and dangerous to society…”
Afterwards we were all wiped out, so 3 families and I went out for a celebration dinner. I left that around 8:45 and drove to the Davis’s and debriefed there until about 12:30am…got home around 1:30am and hit the pillow around 3am.
I am sooo thankful to have gone. Praise the LORD. More later…

sigh…this is going to be a horrible Thursday in court…
MURDERING CHILDREN-MY RESPONSE
I’m going to Lori Nathan’s parole hearing on Thursday.
Up until I read THIS ARTICLE I was fine.
However, reading the article and especially reading the comments from the other victims (kids I knew) etc. brought a lot of memories back and now I’m a little overwhelmed at how …MUCH…this whole thing is. I am thankful that this article gave me a ‘heads up’ on the general tone that will be set at the hearing. 25 years later, the victims, the public, the judicial system…everyone is still impacted as if it happened yesterday.
She was awful. The pictures in the article brought enraging moments of my childhood rushing back. And yet, God’s grace can cover even her….a child abuser and murderer. And even me…a sinner just like her. It’s hard…so hard to understand God’s love despite the constant horror of all our human sin.
So, if you think of it, please pray for me…to know how to interact with people I haven’t seen in 25 years who are hurt, angry, violated, fragile, lost, broken, scared, sad, etc. Pray for me to show Christ somehow to everyone. To the families it won’t be hard, but in an environment where hating Lori Nathan and wanting her to die is considered the ONLY justice… being willing to show her personal (not judicial) grace, hope and the love of Christ will probably be tricky and very unpopular. They hate her. I just want wisdom for knowing when to stay quiet and knowing when to speak. The DA told me to be prepared to speak my written statement to the board. In my heart, I truly believe that she should stay in prison until she’s dead…at that point she will contend with the True Judge who will determine her eternal life sentence…I’m actually very nervous for her for that final hearing.
I know God will punish sin. I know that asking the board to keep her in prison is right and probably totally in-line with God’s will for Lori Nathan. And I will absolutley do it. I just want to consider how I do it. Tone, body language, peace vs. revenge…
I do not struggle with having too much compassion for her. I struggle with wanting to hate her and join in on chanting the ‘She should die’ party line that she has earned. However, my understanding of sin (how we all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God; how not even one of us saved ourselves by our good deeds..or by not committing ‘really’ bad deeds; how my sin, any sin, actually seperated me from God; how the death of the sinless Christ was the only payment that God could accept for my sin) creates a tension that can not be solved with earthly justice, grudges, etc. I guess that’s what’s so amazing about grace. I am reminded of the prodigal son and how the ‘good son’ was so angry at the prodigal’s return…I don’t want to be like the ‘good son’. I don’t want to be self-righteous and consequently be blind to God’s power and love and grace for those who turn back to Him. I don’t know the state of Lori’s soul. But, I do want to have an internal disposition that’s ready to rejoice if she should ever have the scales lifted from her eyes and see what she’s been given in the death and resurrection of Christ. The burden of understanding the kind of sin she’s committed, would be, I’m sure, too immense for a truthful and regretful person to bear and admit they’ve done. I want to be ready to comfort and restore if that’s what the LORD would have happen (knowing that it would enrage all the victims if ‘one of them’, I, showed a disposition of forgiveness). Let’s be honest, her conversion’s probably not going to happen on my watch, but I hope that there comes a day when I hear that she, the prodigal child abuser, has confessed, repented and is now saved, and that on that day my heart would be joyous and not vindictive and angry like the ‘good brother’s’ was.
————————-
IN addition to praying for me, please feel free to email the Gov (who has final rule over granting parole). Email and ask him to deny the parole request of Elenoar Nathan http://gov.ca.gov/interact#email.
————————-
Well, it’s heavy and major and I have to get back to preparing the wedding rehearsal notes of the rehearsal that I’ll be conducting after the parole hearing. Grace…I need it.
WHAT A WEEKEND!
Did that just happen?
Summation: a lot of fun, a lot of laughing, a lot of family and friends, a lot of exhaustion, a lot of Caspers, a lot of driving, a lot of playing a cool new game, a lot of God’s blessing!
OK, so, I’m waaaaay too tired to go into extensive detail, but Holly, and Jennene and I had a whirlwind weekend that was packed with good times.
-The mass/party was cool…it was just some of our family and a few friends=70ish people
. I met all of my social goals (who I wanted to connect with etc).
-Trevor was able to come to the shin-dig and it was so much fun to have him experience all the ‘kids’ grown up now and everyone loved him, of course
-We slept at the Seelye home and so the ladies got to see the new Seelye estate and hang out with Christina for a bit
-We visited the Harveys on the way home…so much fun!!!! I love their new place. Zach was hilarious. Jennene and I did a few ‘greatest hits’ from VBS for Zach…he LOVED it!
-We ate at Long John Silvers for Holly (:()
-We invented a new road trip game that we played almost the entire time in the car on the way home. It’s a game that will work anywhere, anytime, for any length of time…if you’d like to know more, please inquire within.
Even though the trip started out in delayed way and we’re pretty exhausted, it was so much fun. What’s really funny is that Jennene got back in the car this morning with Eric and drove up to SF for a family thing. And, Holly will be flying up to SF this weekend for a friend weekend. Just can’t get enough of NorCal!
Thanx for the good times, God!
SIGALERT
I first learned about SigAlert from Allie Habberstad…she uses it alot to guide her parents when they are on the road and they call in to her (their personal SigAlert operator). However, yesterday was the first time I’d ever had cause to really use it myself…and when I say ‘myself”, I mean we (Jennene and Holly and I) asked the people in the seats next to us in a Castaic coffee shop to look it up on their computer. Why? Because we were all waiting (much like in an airport terminal when your flight’s been delayed) for the freeway to ’start moving again’.
Eventually, we ended up hanging out with our neighboring coffee shop mates, Richard and Stephanie (recent UCSD grads) because every major artery out of SCV was plagued with a MAJOR traffic disaster. 5 North-2 Big rigs overturned with Haz Mat and all lanes shut down; 126-2 fatalities and all lanes shut down; 101-1 fatality and lanes shut down..etc…It was like a movie…doomsday…24…people fleeing the city but can’t move an inch…
So, after hanging out at the Castaic coffee shop for a couple of hours, we decided to go back to my house and wait for a couple more hours until it ‘cleared’…by 11pm (per Sigalert.com) it was still under 14 miles an hour on the 5 North (a huge improvement from earlier, but still not worth trying to drive in). So, I took the girls home and now at 4:36am I am about to go pick them up and try again.
Let’s just say that I’m not starting out on this leg of the journey as rested as I could.
Soooo, the missions trip continues…flexibility…receiving Sovereignty with joy and happiness…and in the spirit of my aunt Colleen’s advice, “Oh, honey, ok, well…travel safely and …have fun.”
Onward (with Sigalert in my back pocket!)!!!!
THE GAMET IN 9 DAYS
God’s grace is sufficient and His mercies are new every morning.
I will need to believe that, especially over the next 9 days:
THIS WEEKEND and be back by Sunday night
-Drive up to SF in about an hour and attend our family mass/party to honor my uncle George and my cousin Scott (I’m guessing there will be about 50+ peeps there). I think Jennene and I are singing at it too.
-Visit & sleep over at the Seelyes
-Visit the Harveys at their new place in Hanford
NEXT WEEK
-Mon, Tues, Wed work etc.
-Wed night drive to Corona and sleep there
-Thursday am-go to the correctional facility where my childhood daycare provider (convicted child murderer) is up for parole. Meet the DA and families that I haven’t seen since I was 7 yrs old and speak to the parole board about why she should not be released early
Thursday pm-leave Corona, fight traffic, completely shift mental gears
and facilitate a wedding rehearsal in Canyon Country (that I’m running)
-Friday: run the wedding/reception etc
-Saturday: Time Warner appt, show houses to a new client, make it to the COC concert (?)
-Sunday: Worshp Team with Jeff Lewis leading, show houses, collapse
I know Christ had an even crazier schedule: constantly with people who had all levels of spiritual, emotional, and physical needs. He must’ve been amazing. I wish I could’ve hung out with Him during His earthly ministry. I wonder how He really handled things. And, I wonder what kind of driver He would’ve been.
YOU ROCKED THE VOTE!
Lanisa Won!!! Praise the LORD!!!!!
Thank you to everyone who voted!
Here is Lanisa’s email from today…
Welp!
It’s 2:15 and I just got off the phone with Jenny from the Fish letting me know that I’m the Starfish Winner! The contest was strictly an online competition. Your votes really mattered! Thank you all so much for lovingly supporting me and my music and enlisting the masses!
I am so excited to get the chance to sing my song “Come On Home” at the FishFest on July 28th. It’s a song that I wrote about 2 years ago after I heard the lyrics and melody in a dream. “Come on home, come on home. Rest your tired and weary soul and come on home. Come on home, come on home. You’re not alone! Come on home!”
I’m really praying this song will somehow reach those who are feeling a void in their lives that only God can fill. Some may have walked away from the Lord and I pray they would hear God’s voice calling them to come back home!
Thank you sooo much for being a part of my journey, for taking the time to vote and giving me such an awesome opportunity to share my music and share my Lord Jesus!
May God give you the desires of your heart!

THAT POOR GIRL
I know that I put a lot of lame headlines on my blog. But this one actually brought me to tears. The sin nature knows no bounds and I am so sad for this little girl’s last moments on earth and how they were probably filled with terror: abducted, thrown out of a grown ups hands into Alligator Alley and being alive when they descended upon her. I am so so so sad for that 5 year old little girl whose only earthly defense against danger was that which adults provided for her. I know God is gracious and merciful and loved her. It’s hard for me to imagine the same grace, mercy and love for her killer.
God’s grace really is amazing.
YOUR VOTE COUNTS!
Lanisa is currently in 2nd place…let’s get her to 1ST PLACE!
the deadline for votes is Thursday (tomorrow) at 5pm.
Please CLICK HERE to choose Lanisa Keith’s song (if you like it and want to vote for her!).
Personal Note-she’s a great singer, yes. However, something else that I really dig about her (and therefore want her to get this chance to perform her song in this venue) is that Lanisa is also a very sincere and compelling performer…on stage…yes, her song is awesome (that she wrote), but so is her delivery as it pours out of her relationship with Christ. So, I imagine the edification/encouragement of Lanisa winning will be far greater for the audience than for her…I hope she gets the chance to bless the audience!! so, go VOTE!
ON DEMAND
Ok, so the dominoe effects of house repairs, the continuous flow of people moving in/out, putting up wall decor…it’s all still happening. It’s a bit of an adventure that continues to provide for personal, spiritual and financial fortitude and discovery. One recent and hilarious discovery was made yesterday when we were cruising around the ‘On-Demand’ features of our Time Warner cable menu.
Karoake On-Demand! That’s right my friends. Who knew?! Party at our place!
Yesterday, Holly, Dyer, Mandy and I sang/ laughed our faces off to hits from Journey, Bette Midler, Blondie and other old time classics!
While it’s not the ‘Familial Spices’ I’m used to, it does kick off the next chapter of Norman Rockwell family life…perhaps we’ll call it ‘Familial Karoake’.
YOU & MY FAVORITE SONG ON LANISA’S CD
So, you remember Lanisa Keith right? She and her husband love the LORD and use the gifts He’s given them to create great art. Lanisa’s primary art is music. She’s recently been chosen as a top 5 finalist for the FISH 95.9 radio station contest!!!!!
The winner of the contest (hopefully Lanisa!) will perform their song live on the main stage of the concert at FishFest in Southern California at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine on July 28th. From July 9th-18th, the radio station will be collecting votes through their website. In order to win, the winner needs the most votes.
The song of Lanisa’s that’s been nominated from her latest album is my favorite one on that album ‘Come Home’. CLICK HERE TO check it out and if you want to vote for her, please do!!! This would be an incredible opportunity for her and her career! Will you vote for her?
Thanx, you’re sweet!
GUNNER’S BLESSING
If you haven’t read Gunner’s blog today, you probably should. The openness with which he shares God’s transforming work in he and Cindi’s life is quieting. Just read it…I think you’ll find it edifying…well, I did, at least.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS
Some jobs are really hard…especially when they’re illegal.
THIS GUY took the occupational risk and swallowed 4.4 POUNDS of cocaine in order to smuggle it. Really? Really. The $2.7 million load was in the form of 150 pellets…some burst in his stomach and he began showing signs of an overdose. Shocking.
The article is short and dumbfounding. The guy is currently hospitalized and under arrest…and only 30 years old. Suggestion: get a real job, preferrably one with a great health plan.
WE MIGHT THINK TWICE IF…
we were going to be stoned to death. Wouldn’t we?
Jennene and I were just talking about the adultery trend in the Western thinking/world and how it might radically halt if you knew you were going to be stoned to death for it…like they were in the Biblical accounts. It would beg the question, ‘Is this fleeting encounter of ‘passion’, that will devestate my family and dishonor my God, worth dying for? And dying in a gruesome way?’.
In a timely manner, THIS Article appeared in today’s paper…please note that upon the stoning, he had been in prison for 11 years…THEN stoned to death. In some ways it would be refreshing if we hated the crimes (that God hates) as much as other countries did. Food for thought.
Please note that other crimes punishable by stoning to death include murder, rape, armed robbery, apostasy, blasphemy, serious drug trafficking, prostitution, treason and espionage. It’s interesting how all of these crimes are in one form or another a sin and a violation against someone else (including God). I just wonder how life in the US and in other ‘liberated’ countries would be different if people joyfully lived according to the 10 commandements. Huh.
DINNER AT GUNPOINT
Josh & Marda Mack just moved to South Africa to minister there…they were out to dinner with Beth when THIS HAPPENED. Just a real life reminder that the gospel may require your peace of mind and safety.
JEFF WILSON-MADE IN THE SHADE
Want the Nordstrom in customer service in your General Contractor? Then call my guy, Jeff Wilson-Made In the Shade at (661) 212-9593. While he and his crew are still scraping my ceilings etc., I have been thoroughly impressed: they arrive everyday at 8am, they work hard all day with scheduled breaks, the crew members are polite and courteous, they shop vac the work area everyday before they leave, I can always get Jeff on his cell, his price is right and best of all…he’s a highly skilled good ole boy whose reputation is the most important thing to him and therefore he conducts his business accordingly. An affiliate after my own heart!
While personally I’m growing weary of the entire house being under construction, furniture still in the garage, dust everywhere from the acoustic ceiling removal, it makes it all worth it knowing that I am getting a job well done and NOT getting ripped off.
If you need ANYthing done in your home, you should call Jeff. Just so you know, he’s in demand, so call him for a quote the moment you know you need him and he’ll work you in the rotation. Tell him I sent you!
*As a sidenote, there is another contractor in SCV who has a company called Made In the Shade. These are not the same companies and the level of skill and service are different (per clients who have confused them). Make sure that you’re talking to JEFF WILSON of Made In the Shade. If it’s Jeff, it’s the guy I’m recommending. If it’s not Jeff, it’s not the guy I’m recommending.

Wow. The LORD is good and I am tired.

-We all went to In & Out as our farwell burger to AP (it was a late-night burger)
-Prepped the house for the General Contractor’s 8am start time
-Got to bed around 3am and the alarm started going off at 6am
MONDAY
-I woke up feeling like I’d been traveling all night on a plane…swollen feet etc.

So, I’m really thankful for everyone’s help and enthusiasm and belief that this whole ‘house’ thing was a good choice. I am thankful for the body of Christ (and sleep, I hope).
