POST LENGTH & READERSHIP

So, there is a debate that continues to rage on in my personal life…one side thinks that people don’t like to read longer posts, one side thinks that people will generally read the post no matter how long it is…what side are you on?  What are the factors that affect your readership?  Please help end the debate.  Please.

Short is better. Twice as long as this post is the optimal length. That said, there are a very few people who I will put up with long posts from, and you are probably one of them until you betray my trust with some rambling commentary on a spare subject. But usually when I see more than 2 paragraphs in my bloglines I automatically skip.

I haven’t been reading enough blogs to know my ultimate preference – but I usually always read yours no matter how long because they are interesting…I would say it depends on the writer’s style ;)

What’s deeply ironic is that I wrote that comment, and then immediately afterward wrote a long post. And it was about hypocrisy.

Sometimes I save the longer ones for later… but since I’ve added your posts to my reader, I have to say I usually read through them at some point – even this one, I read the post and all the comments looking for interesting stuff because I know I’ve found it here before :)

I vote for a mix – some long, some short.

as long as you really say something, the length shouldn’t matter. friends have complained about my long blogs but i don’t care. often, six months after a post, a friend will go back and be affected by the previous long post.

blogs don’t have to be instant messaging.

when length is relative to depth, the people prosper; or something.

Is this just a ploy to get a bunch of comments? Well, if so, it’s working. I say often is better than seldom. Length of the post is only relevant if the writer is boring or incoherent and you don’t have that problem.

Thanks for asking. I usually prefer short, but I’m impatient. I would like the writer to feel the freedom to write what they feel like writing, as long as they are reasonably concise.

If I try to comment with what I really want to say, my comment will be 5x longer than the 8 before me. I don’t mind long posts if they’re reasoned, profitable, and well-written. I do think that it’s just life that more people will read short posts than long ones. I generally write long posts, but I feel like it takes me that long to develop my thoughts in a full-orbed way. I want to learn to be more concise, but never cheap or lazy or pandering. Just because people like short sermons and easy diets and microwaves doesn’t mean the path of least resistance is ultimately profitable. But long doesn’t equal spiritual, either. So I’d say: Post what you’re thinking, and vary the length.
